Supporting Mental Health at Work
When we think about workplace wellness, physical health usually takes centre stage. But mental health is just as critical and often deeply affected by how we structure the workday.
The BMJ Smart Work and Life study found that reducing sitting time through the use of height-adjustable desks doesn’t just improve physical outcomes, t also leads to better mental well-being.
Participants reported lower levels of fatigue, stress, and presenteeism (being at work but not fully productive due to poor health). They also experienced improvements in mood and overall quality of life.
Why? Movement interrupts the monotony of desk work, boosts energy, and creates mental “resets” that improve focus.
Standing even for short periods has been linked to greater alertness and reduced anxiety. Over time, these small shifts add up to a healthier, more resilient workforce.
For employers, investing in height-adjustable desks isn’t only about ergonomics, it’s about creating an environment where mental health can flourish. Supporting employees’ ability to move freely shows care for their well-being, and that care translates directly into motivation, engagement, and long-term retention.
